Learning Self Defense, is like going to grammar school or learning to ride a bike, is in its essence, a simple task that when one applies themselves properly and absolutely without reservation, one can quickly and easily learn the basics and then apply them to practically any situation or circumstance resulting in a victorious and uneventful outcome where one is safe and unharmed. One must embrace the teachings and thrust themselves into the work; one must truly and faithfully apply themselves.
To begin with, everyone learns, absorbs and processes information at different speeds and personal individual levels, and as well people react differently to unique circumstances and situations. Self-assessment and self-evaluation is key to beginning the process effectively.
Who are you? What are you willing to do or sacrifice to stay alive, unharmed and return to the status quo?
Personal Philosophy or perhaps Religious feelings or ideology may keep a person from seeking to harm another human being or perhaps to be in a position where one has to kill another in order to stay alive.
The Psychology of or perhaps the thought of the goriness of flesh, bone and blood splattering might make a person nauseous or sick to their stomach and not be able to harm another in order to protect themselves.
In themselves these are simple explanations, however the mind is an extremely complex, a biochemical machine that reacts to electrical impulses and chemical signals based on the environment, situation, etc., of the mind , body and soul and a million processes going on at the same time in just an instant. It is extremely difficult to predict, understand or calculate with any accuracy based on only guesswork at best.
But it can be trained. It can be taught to allow its natural and internal self-preservation system and instincts to come to the surface take over the bodily functions and do what its meant to do, live, thrive and survive.
The Technology and Methodology one has to learn, and practice is not extremely difficult. Rather it’s a simple matter of time, knowledge and application. As well, one must understand the basics and what is practical and necessary and continually practice consistently over a definite minimum period of time.
What is optimally important are your feelings about the choices you have to make or are willing to make to defend yourself, stay alive, unharmed and what you ultimately have to do to permanently fend off an aggressor.
Once personal Psychology and Philosophy have been defined and understood within the goals and objectives which have been identified and established early in the training then one can count on what one knows to help themselves in a perilous and precarious situation.
One ultimately, has to know themselves and one has to commit to their chosen path of imminent and sometimes extremely violent actions.
Now the Technology one has to learn to defend and protect themselves as well as the Methodology which must be applied, becomes simple matter. A little knowledge, a lot of practice and a dash of experience along with the commitment to do, “whatever it takes,” "what ever is necessary," to avoid pain, injury or perhaps even death, becomes critical.
Again, for all this to work one has to know themselves and, one has to commit to the chosen path and their personal choices and course of action.
There can be no change of heart or mind once committed unless something drastically changes the circumstances which originally caused the invocation of defensive actions in the first place. ‘The situation must become healthy, neutral, natural, with no harm caused and ultimately safe for all concerned parties.

In themselves these are simple explanations; however, the mind/body is an extremely complex biochemical, electrical impulsive machine, made of mind, body and soul which acts and reacts to internal, external and environmental stimuli with and or without the controller's thoughts or assistance and which is very much extremely difficult to understand.
However, it can be trained in order to allow its internal self-preservation natural instincts to come to the surface and do what they are meant to do, live, strive and survive for as long as it is naturally possible.
